We Catch Up With Sam Divine for International Women’s Day

We’re celebrating the amazing female talent on our 2024 lineup this International Women’s Day. One of those acts is Sam Divine, also known as The First Lady of Defected.

A born entertainer with a burning desire to play music to people around the world, Sam’s enigmatic sets are an effortless schooling in pure, unadulterated house and she has become an intrinsic part of the UK house music scene. We caught up with Sam to find out what we can expect from her We Are FSTVL set, as well as what else she has in store for this year.

When did you decide you wanted to be a DJ - was there a catalyst or did you know from a young age you'd work in music?

I bought my first album at 7 years old and I used to make mix tapes from a very early age. I went to my first rave at 15 years old and when I was 19 I saw a female DJ called Lisa Pin-Up play in Bristol and I was mesmerised by the way she conducted the crowd and had them eating out of her hand. It was at that moment I knew I wanted to be a DJ. I then taught myself how to DJ in my mum’s shed in the bottom of her garden.

Which women in the music industry have inspired you the most?

Lisa Pin-Up, Lisa Lashes, Lisa Loud, Smokin’ Jo, Annie Mac and Maya Jane Coles.

Did you face any challenges when you first emerged onto the scene? If so, what were they and how did you overcome them?

Not really! I’m very tough skinned and don’t take no for an answer. I threw myself into the technique and art of mixing. I was like a sponge, asking questions and soaking it all up. I was very much in my own lane and I felt I had a unique talent which put me on line ups with my heroes.

What advice would you give to any females looking to break into the industry?

Keep doing what you’re doing. Be really good at everything. Have a strong brand and be humble.

What song do you have on repeat right now?

My remix of Dennis Ferrer – Mind Ur Step.

What's the best set you've ever seen?

Kerri Chandler at Blue Marlin in Ibiza. It was immaculate.

What is your favourite thing about festival season?

Playing outside is a firm fave. Everyone is high on life, the sun is shining and spirits are high.

What can we expect from your set at We Are FSTVL this year?

I never know what I’m going to play until I plug my sticks in. I’m roadtesting a lot of new music at the moment and I wrote them with festival season in mind. We Are FSTVL is very close to my heart. I played from 2013-2019 so I can’t wait to return.

What else is in store for you this year?

More touring, more music, more life.

What is one thing you can't live without?

My sleep mask.

We can’t wait for Sam’s set at We Are FSTVL this year – grab your ticket now. See you at the barrier!
